How to Install Pool Tile Products

Anybody involved in the swimming pool industry should know how to install pool tile and mosaic products, even if they don’t specialise in this type of finish. But if you are hiring a contractor to install and tile a pool for you, make sure that they really are experts in pool tiling. Good quality pool tiles are not cheap, and they need to be installed correctly using the very best adhesives and grouts.

 How to Install Pool Tile

Be warned that there are many companies worldwide that have no specialist knowledge relating to pool tiling, usually because they only contract to build swimming pools that are finished with marble plaster. But as an increasing number of companies manufacture and produce specialist pool tiles that they export to other countries, it has become essential to ensure that tiles can be installed according to their highest expectations. If your swimming pool contractor doesn’t have the necessary expertise, and you can’t find someone who does, then it is a good idea to contact the manufacturers of the tiles you have bought (or plan to buy) for advice on how installations should be carried out correctly.

Funnily enough the correct procedure for installing pool tiles is not a difficult one. There are some basic building principles that should be followed, including the need for horizontal surfaces to be level and vertical surfaces to be plumb. Also the surface that is being tiled must be clean, free of any residue, and dry, before work begins.

But probably even more important is the need for good quality adhesives and grouts to be used. When tiles are used to finish the interior of swimming pools, they need to be able to resist the effects of constant water without any sort of damage. It is also vital that the adhesive doesn’t wear and the grout is not affected either by the water, the chemicals used to keep the water clean, or any debris, algae or other pollutants that find their way into the water. So be sure to match quality with quality.

Having chosen the very best products for the job, the procedure to follow is reasonably simple:

· Ensure that the shell is complete and has been suitably sealed, preferably with marble plaster.

· Mix the tile adhesive according to the manufacturer’s instructions and spread on the surface using a suitable tiling trowel.

· Work on a reasonably small area at a time, starting at the deep end and then moving to the shallow end.

· Work systematically laying the deep end walls, working from the floor upwards, and then a portion of the floor. Note that scaffolding will be required for a deep pool.

· Work along a predefined line, and lay the tiles, pressing them firmly into the adhesive.

· Once the tiles are in place you can systematically fill the joints with waterproof grout.

· The tile adhesive and grout must set thoroughly before you fill the pool shell with water. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions to the last letter.

This is a very short resume of how to lay pool tile; be sure that whoever does the job for you has the necessary experience to ensure the job will be a success.
